There is a very interesting little passage (329) in Al-Biruni (1029 CE)
The Book of Instruction in the elements of the art of astrology
(trans R. Ramsey Wright) on glyphs.
"The back of the astrolobe sometimes has the terms or limits of the planets, the faces and triplicities engraved on it; if there is room also the names of the planets, while these are generally indicated by the Greek marks (h) Saturn, (2j) Jupiter, [etc.]... The Hindus, however, use the initials of the their names for them."
There follows a table with the glyphs copied from several Arabic and Persian MSS of the text, dating from 1270-1700. Venus hooked does not appear. What I took to be a boomerang in PGM VII. 795-845 is in fact here a lunar crescent. Venus is represented in 1286 and 1626 as it is today, but in 1282 the subscript cross is a downward pointing three pronged affair, in 1700 it is two diagonal lines.
This is all very interesting but does not further the issue. Rather we have more evidence of a scriptoria tradition, used apparently also on astrolobes, with variants both by the Greek and the Arabic and Persian copists and instrument makers. So mythology is definitely a non-starter.
But what is really interesting is the comment that the marks are 'of the Greeks,' thus we have a
terminus ante quem
for these of 1082. I do not have a text of Mâ'shâ'a allah (9th cent.) to check what he wrote about astrolabes. The earliest surviving Islamic astrolabe dates from 927/8 CE.
And it is interesting too that 'the Hindus use the inital letters of [the] names,' which means that they are following a development of the generally recognised practice of Greek astrologers who brought the craft to them--
before
the marks were invented, that is to write out the names as words.

Alternately, Zodiac plane as the platform within
the Sphere of Space. The signs as compass
directions or azimuths, 0-Aries = East (90). In
which case they (and every degree within them)
can also be grouped mathematically or
harmonically as you wish. But basically in terms
of 4 cardinals, plus the ecliptical poles of
the vertical axis through Center (the observation
or event point, the 1st of the 7 Directions.
Or, Local Space plane plus Zenith & Nadir --
whichever sphere is the focus.
