Only a small number of the 4095 ways of grouping 12 signs or 12 anything have received technical names. Here is an elementary list. Additions, comments, and corrections are welcome.

How many patterns of signs do you know - I mean patterns like "the Fire signs", "the Autumn signs", "the nocturnal signs" etc.? Being able to recognize major groups of signs is important for several reasons: it can help us read ancient texts; it can help us notice similarities and differences in our practice. I don't imagine many people know all the groupings that have been used in Western astrology. The following, culled mainly from DeVore's encyclopaedia, are listed roughly from the more familiar to the more exotic.

I would like commentators to add any other patterns they may know about, including variant definitions or names attested in literature.

Spring signs: ar, ta, ge. Applicable only in tropical context.

Summer or Aestival signs: cn, le, vi. Applicable only in tropical context.

Autumnal signs: lb, sc, sg. Applicable only in tropical context.

Winter or Hiemal signs: cp, aq, ps. Applicable only in tropical context.

Commanding signs, also called Northern = Spring + Summer signs.

Obeying signs, also called Southern = Autumnal + Winter signs.

Ascending signs, also called signs of Short ascension = Winter + Spring signs.

Descending signs, also called signs of Long ascension = Summer + Autumn signs.

--The following groups can be used in tropical or sidereal contexts.

Cardinal signs, also called Moveable, Leading, or Initiating = ar, cn, lb, cp.

Fixed signs, also called Conceptive, = ta, le, sc, aq.

Mutable signs, also called Common, Dual, or Bicorporeal = ge, vi, sg, ps.

Fire signs, also called Bitter = ar, le, sg.

Earth signs, also called Melancholy = ta, vi, cp.

Air signs, also called Whole, Perfect, or Sweet = ge, lb, aq.

Water signs, also called Fruitful, Mute or Hoarse = cn, sc, ps.

Diurnal signs, also called Positive or Masculine = Fire + Air signs.

Nocturnal signs, also called Negative or Feminine = Earth + Water signs. Note: I much prefer the designations "Diurnal" and "Nocturnal".

Dry signs = Fire + Earth signs.

Moist signs = Air + Water signs.

Equinoctial signs = ar, lb.

Tropical signs = cn, cp. Note: there seems to be no term for the four signs which border on the equinoctial points, nor for the four which border on the solstitial points.

Crooked signs = ta, cp, ps.

Human signs = ge, vi, aq and the first half of sg. Note: do some authors include lb?

Imperfect signs, also called Broken or Mutilated = le, sc, ps.

Brutish signs = le and the second half of sg.

Barren signs = ge, le, vi.

Quadrupedal signs, also called Four-footed = ar, ta, le, sg, cp.

Ruminant signs = ar, ta, cp.

Feral signs, also called Bestial = cp + Brutish + Ruminant signs.

Strong signs = sc, aq.

Violent signs = ar, lb, sc, cp, aq.

Weak signs = cn, cp, ps.

glyphs ter bis ( none / 0 ) (#17)
by LSmerillo (kajamanu@rdn.it) on Sun Jun 2nd, 2002 at 04:03:23 EDT
(User Info)

There is a very interesting little passage (329) in Al-Biruni (1029 CE) The Book of Instruction in the elements of the art of astrology (trans R. Ramsey Wright) on glyphs.

"The back of the astrolobe sometimes has the terms or limits of the planets, the faces and triplicities engraved on it; if there is room also the names of the planets, while these are generally indicated by the Greek marks (h) Saturn, (2j) Jupiter, [etc.]... The Hindus, however, use the initials of the their names for them."

There follows a table with the glyphs copied from several Arabic and Persian MSS of the text, dating from 1270-1700. Venus hooked does not appear. What I took to be a boomerang in PGM VII. 795-845 is in fact here a lunar crescent. Venus is represented in 1286 and 1626 as it is today, but in 1282 the subscript cross is a downward pointing three pronged affair, in 1700 it is two diagonal lines.

This is all very interesting but does not further the issue. Rather we have more evidence of a scriptoria tradition, used apparently also on astrolobes, with variants both by the Greek and the Arabic and Persian copists and instrument makers. So mythology is definitely a non-starter.

But what is really interesting is the comment that the marks are 'of the Greeks,' thus we have a terminus ante quem for these of 1082. I do not have a text of Mâ'shâ'a allah (9th cent.) to check what he wrote about astrolabes. The earliest surviving Islamic astrolabe dates from 927/8 CE.

And it is interesting too that 'the Hindus use the inital letters of [the] names,' which means that they are following a development of the generally recognised practice of Greek astrologers who brought the craft to them-- before the marks were invented, that is to write out the names as words.

feliciter,

Lorenzo Smerillo

included as the 22nd Trump of the Major Arcanum).

This special Group of 10 stellia represents the

Alternately, Zodiac plane as the platform within
the Sphere of Space. The signs as compass
directions or azimuths, 0-Aries = East (90). In
which case they (and every degree within them)
can also be grouped mathematically or
harmonically as you wish. But basically in terms
of 4 cardinals, plus the ecliptical poles of
the vertical axis through Center (the observation
or event point, the 1st of the 7 Directions.

Or, Local Space plane plus Zenith & Nadir --
whichever sphere is the focus.
