As more than a few have pointed out on various mailing lists, the last couple of days have been more than a little eventful. There was the shooting dead of far right leader Pim Fortuyn in the Netherlands, another suicide bombing in Israel, a major plane crash in northeast China, a bus bomb in Pakistan, and the arrest of a young American student for his alleged connection with a series of pipe bombs in the United States. I've culled data for all these events from various posts on mailing lists and news sources on the Internet, and am posting them in this article. Post Comment

The week began ominously with the assassination of Pim Fortuyn, leader of the far-right Lijst Pim Fortuyn party of the Netherlands. The shooting has shocked the country and Europe. The BBC asks: Is the assassination a political watershed?

Source is Jeanne Peters by way of stellardweller on the AstroMundi mailing list, but no indication as to whether this is from the birth certificate. There is a variation on this data from an individual on the i_predict mailing list with a birth time of 00:15, reportedly from Dutch astrologer Selma Schepel by way of Pim Fortuyn himself. Anyone who can confirm this please post!

There is no firm death time from the BBC and other English language news sources, but the shooting took place at 18:00 and sources have the time of death somewhere between 18:05 and 18:25. I have the time of death somewhere between 18:00 and 18:15 according to stellardweller@AstroMundi, and other sources on the conjunction and i_predict mailing lists. The source on the i_predict mailing list has the "suspect arrested at 18:11, reanimation stopped at 18:25", and pronounced dead by Hilversum Police at 20:00. A source on conjunction states the death occured at 18:06.

On Tuesday, China Northern Airlines Flight 6136 crashed killing all 112 passengers and crew. You can read the full story at the BBC. Speculation is that the crash was caused by "an intense fire on board moments before the crash." The ground controllers lost contact with the crew at 21:32 (13:32 GMT). The plane crashed "about 20 kilometers east of the resort city of Dalian.". I presume this is Dalianhe, but can't confirm this at the moment. So far, the data I have is:

On Wednesday, a suicide bomber in Karachi killed himself and 13 others, 11 of them French navy experts and another 2 were Pakistanis. The attack is reported to have taken place at 8 AM local time according to this report.

Also on Wendesday, college student Luke John Helder was arrested in connection with a series of pipe bombs in 5 U.S states. No birth time is known yet, but his date of birth is 5 May, 1981 according to the FBI (link no longer avilable, but this has been confirmed), and he was born in Pine Island, Minnesota. You can read a BBC report for more information.

I'd like to see the posting of data with news items with or without astrological observations become a regular feature at urania.info. I've done it in a batched format this time, and have refrained from any astrological observations because it's been a time-consuming process, but anyone is welcome to do things differently. Any constructive criticism is welcome.

There is an interesting article taking another point of view on the legacy of Pim Fortuyn. Read Adam Currie's The Big Lie for another view.

Currie believes the far-right tag given to Fortuyn was grossly exagerated by his opponents and the international media. The depiction of Fortuyn as a "Hard Right-WInger" and racist is in stark contrast with the real Pim Fortuyn, the man "the country had enjoyed for ten years as a writer of many political books and weekly columns always aimed squarely at exposing the underbelly of Dutch politics, which is mostly played out behind closed doors in the Hague. All Dutch know it, but Pim wasn't afraid to say it."

For writer Adam Currie, Fortuyn's message was about exposing the truth of Dutch of politics, and in his death and the surrounding media frenzy there is a lie about the man.

I was immediately struck by how appropriate this description is for a man who has Saturn/Pluto conjunct the MC. Saturn/Pluto is, among other things, about stripping things down to a "core" or "getting back to basics" as Charles Harvey put it. Some astrologers go on about the misery of Saturn-Pluto, but one thing this combination symbolizes is cutting out the crap and getting down to the nitty-gritty of an issue. There's not much fat in Saturn-Pluto and from what I can tell, there wasn't much fat on Mr. Fortuyn either. If one were to describe the 'look' of Saturn-Pluto, these pictures would help.

What's interesting too is he seems to have elicited extreme reactions from people. My reading of the news sources so far indicate he was not really far-right at all, at least not in the way Le Pen is. He was a former Marxist and sociology professor "who then became an opinionated right-wing columnist and a political consultant to Dutch Christian Democrats before setting up his own political party less than three months ago." He was an intellectual and was known as "Professor Pim", was proudly gay, and found any comparisons between himself and LePen insulting. He's not the kind of far-right leader LePen or GWB would feel comfortable with.

Some astrological notes:

Saturn/Pluto conjunct MC in his chart express his politics and people's reactions to them. In his time, he was a Marxist who later jumped ship to the right and was lumped in with the "far-right" of Europe - so he was probably often regarded as extreme. He attracted a racist element even if he wasn't actually racist.

He was misunderstood and felt misunderstood - Venus in the 5th opposite Neptune in the 11th. A crucial point in his politics his we was apparently anti-immigrant, when the truth is a little different.

The assassination occured during the Uranus opposition to his natal Mars, and it's also interesting to note it took place outside a popular radio station. Also, that his death took place with the current Mars/Saturn = Pluto while he has natal Mars/Pluto=Saturn is suggestive of a resonance between his natal pattern in Leo and the current transits.

There's tons more I don't have time to get into, but I think Fortuyn's chart merit a full-length article. When you've got Americans talking about a Dutch politician, let alone a gay Dutch politician, he's got to be special:-)

Being diffident about my editorial privileges (and not knowing about changing the AstroDienst map) I am making this a comment.

Dalian is what used to be called Dairen in pre-politically-correct days. In recent times it has also been called Lüda. Times Atlas puts the city at 38n53 121e37; www.landings.com puts the airport (DLC) at 38n54 121e38. At that latitude 20 km is about 13 arc minutes in longitude, but from looking at a map I would say the middle of Dalien Bay, or even quite a bit east of the middle, would not take us farther than 38n54 121e46. So that's where I would place the accident.

Without going into a time-consuming analysis of each event, just picking up an ephemeris and looking at the potful of Mars, Saturn and Pluto for violence mixed in with a seething dollop of Venus for passionately held values and beliefs and we can see the recipe for murderous clashes.
And we haven't even gotten to the eclipses.
